Astrud Gilberto, a Brazilian samba and bossa nova singer and former wife of João Gilberto, emerged as an accidental star when her limited English led to her iconic performance of “The Girl from Ipanema” with Stan Getz and João on the Getz/Gilberto album. Despite her fragile, amateurish vocal style, her debut solo LP, The Astrud Gilberto Album, released in 1965, rivals its predecessor, leveraging her sweet voice and a stellar Brazilian repertoire suited to delicate vocalists. Arranger Marty Paich’s radiant string arrangements, paired with lead instruments like Bud Shank’s flute, João Donato’s piano, and Antonio Carlos Jobim’s guitar, perfectly complement Gilberto’s vocals on tracks like the sentimental “Dindi” and playful “Agua de Beber.” With intelligent musicians playing to her strengths, this splendid album solidifies her role as a key figure in the bossa nova movement.
