B.B. Driftwood - Southward Bound (2012)

Title: B.B. Driftwood – Southward Bound (2012)
Genre: Folk, R&B, Soul
Format: SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

B.B. Driftwood, real name Bengt Skoghoft, may sound like a Southern bluesman, but he hails from far beyond the U.S. South. His debut SACD, Southward Bound, blends blues with rock, gospel, country, and R&B, echoing Eric Bibb while showcasing his unique style. Driftwood wrote all the album’s songs, infusing Cuban/Brazilian rhythms and top-notch musicianship. The title track features his bluesy voice, unusual chords, and Sebastian Notini’s skilled percussion. Backing vocals by Paris Renita and others add a Leonard Cohen-like polish. Standout tracks like “Sweet Elizabeth” bring zydeco flair, with Driftwood playing multiple instruments, supported by musicians like Staffan Astner. “A Way To Celebrate” shines with thoughtful lyrics and lasting melodies, reminiscent of The Wire’s “Way Down in the Hole.” “Strange How Things Can Turn Around” features Eric Bibb’s 12-string guitar, blending gospel and tight rhythms. Driftwood’s Otis Redding-inspired “Love Must Prevail” and the instrumental “Aliki Moonlight” round out the diverse album. Recorded by Sweden’s Opus 3, this SACD offers superior DSD sound quality, delivering a spacious and relaxing listening experience.
