Nowadays, she represents feeling and soul within her songs, no matter whether she sings in English or Japanese. After her marriage, she moved to the United States and was discovered and sponsored by Earl “Fatha” Hines. She found her enthusiastic fans touring San Francisco, Las Vegas, Montreal and lots of places in California, performing in the clubs, local radio stations or on TV. In the ‘80s, she started a roving life between the United States and Japan. Due to her recordings for TBM and the performances for the radio stations and on TV, she became one of the best-known pop and jazz singers throughout her country.

Taylor’s Wailers is the debut album by drummer Art Taylor, released in 1957 on Prestige. It features tracks recorded mainly on February 25, 1957 plus a track from a different session featuring John Coltrane. Five of the six selections on this reissue feature drummer Art Taylor in an all-star sextet of mostly young players comprised of trumpeter Donald Byrd, altoist Jackie McLean, Charlie Rouse on tenor, pianist Ray Bryant, and bassist Wendell Marshall. Among the highpoints of the 1957 hard bop date are the original version of Bryant’s popular “Cubano Chant” and strong renditions of two Thelonious Monk tunes (“Off Minor” and “Well, You Needn’t”) cut just prior to the pianist/composer’s discovery by the jazz public. Bryant is the most mature of the soloists, but the three horn players were already starting to develop their own highly individual sounds. The remaining track (a version of Jimmy Heath’s “C.T.A.”) is played by the quartet of Taylor, tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, and bassist Paul Chambers and is a leftover (although a good one) from another session.

Although Art Taylor was one of the busiest modern second-generation jazz drummers, working in the studio with Coleman Hawkins, Donald Byrd, John Coltrane and many others, he only released five albums under his own name, of which A.T.’s Delight was the third. And a delight it is indeed, bright and percussive, and when conga player Carlos “Patato” Valdes joins Taylor and pianist Wynton Kelly and bassist Paul Chambers on three cuts (Thelonious Monk’s “Epistrophy,” “Move” and a Taylor calypso-inflected original called “Cookoo and Fungi”), the rhythm pocket opens into a deep blue sea for the horn men (Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax and Dave Burns on trumpet). “Move” does exactly that, it moves, and at a blistering pace. Monk’s “Epistrophy,” thanks in part to Valdes, reveals its rumba roots, and has never sounded brighter. The seldom-covered Coltrane composition “Syeeda’s Song Flute” seems likewise refreshed and revived. The lone Taylor original, the driving “Cookoo and Fungi,” is as sharp and alert is a kitten waking from a nap in the spring sun, and Taylor’s drum solo is crisp, efficient and slides seamlessly into the calypso-informed main theme. A.T.’s Delight is a solid outing, with a wonderfully nervous but completely focused energy.

Art Tatum, a pianist of unmatched technical mastery, shines in Piano Starts Here, a definitive album combining four 1933 solo studio recordings, including “Tea for Two” and “Tiger Rag,” with a 1949 live concert at the Shrine Auditorium, previously marred by slow pitch, awkward edits to the Gershwin medley, and reordered tracks. Zenph Studios used 21st-century technology to recreate these performances, correcting speed, restoring the full Gershwin medley (with “Summertime” and more, thanks to discographer Arnold Laubich), and replicating Tatum’s key and pedal work via MIDI on a Yamaha Disklavier Pro, recorded in stereo and binaural formats at the exact Shrine stage spot. The 1949 concert dazzles with a playful “Humoresque,” a rollicking “Tatum Pole Boogie,” a complete “Gershwin Medley,” and uptempo gems like “How High the Moon” and a bluesy “Willow Weep for Me,” all boasting vastly improved fidelity. Offered in stereo surround for ideal sound and binaural stereo for an intimate, pianist’s-ear perspective (with audible applause and air conditioning), this controversial yet marvelous re-performance enhances, but doesn’t replace, the original, giving jazz fans a clearer sense of Tatum’s genius on a top-notch instrument.

Art Pepper’s tenth album as a leader, recorded in 1957, marks his emergence as a distinctive alto saxophonist, moving beyond the influence of Charlie Parker and Lee Konitz, with the Miles Davis rhythm section—Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums)—amplifying his transformation in a vibrant east-meets-west, cool-yet-hot session. The quartet delivers bright moments with a loose yet precise “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To,” a “Bags Groove”-inspired “Red Pepper Blues,” and a delicate “Imagination,” while Pepper’s collaborations with Chambers on the lively “Waltz Me Blues” and fast-paced “Straight Life” showcase his virtuosity. As a sort of follow-up to Art Pepper’s matchup with Miles Davis’ trio in the 1957 classic Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section, Pepper utilizes Davis’ sidemen on this 1960 near-classic. In addition to pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb, trumpeter Conte Candoli makes the group a quintet on four of the eight numbers. This time around, rather than emphasizing standards, Pepper performs just three (“Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise,” Thelonious Monk’s “Rhythm-A-Ning,” and “The Way You Look Tonight”) and includes three originals of his own: “Diane,” “Bijou the Poodle,” and “Gettin’ Together.” The music is all very straight-ahead and bop-oriented, but as usual, Pepper brings something very personal and unique to his playing; he sounds like no one else.

Despite his very erratic lifestyle, altoist Art Pepper never made a bad record. This collection is better than most. The first four titles team together Pepper with tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh, pianist Ronnie Ball, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer Gary Frommer for generally intriguing explorations of four standards. One can feel the influence of Lennie Tristano (with Pepper in Lee Konitz’s place), although Pepper had his own sound and a more hard-swinging style. The success of the Pepper-Marsh front line makes one wish that they had recorded together again. The other three selections are leftovers from a trio of classic Pepper albums, and all are quite worthwhile. Pepper is heard backed by three separate rhythm sections, which include pianists Red Garland, Dolo Coker, or Wynton Kelly; either Paul Chambers or Jimmy Bond on bass; and Philly Joe Jones, Frank Butler, or Jimmy Cobb on drums. Overall, this album sticks to bop standards and finds Art Pepper in top form.
