Ole Bull (1810-1880) was an adventurer, violin virtuoso, composer and international star who brought the name of Norway to worldwide attention. Within music and drama he was a pioneer in the development of a national identity, and on the concert stage his fabulous playing skills and intense charisma early won him the sobriquet “the Scandinavian Paganini”.

Some of his most attractive tunes, as well as the rural potpourri Et Sæterbesøghave remained part of Norway’s cultural heritage; on this recording they can be heard alongside his two virtuosic violin concertos and the fiery Spanish fantasiaLa Verbena de San Juan. The concertos and the fantasia were rediscovered only a few years ago, and this is the first recording ever made of these attractive works. The A major Concerto was written in Italy in 1834 and boasts everything one could ever dream of when it comes to attractive tunes and giddy virtuosity. No. 2, Concerto Fantastico, lives indisputably up to its name and confirms what Franz Liszt wrote in 1840: “He is a sort of savage’s genius, possessing an abundance of original, enchanting ideas. In brief, he has moved me; it is a long time since that has happened to me.”

Though Andrea Bocelli kicks off SENTIMENTO with a 20th Century piece, the stately setting of Rodrigo’s “En Aranjuez con tu amor,” the balance of the album wisely focuses on one of the renowned vocalist’s greatest strengths, the Romantic period, as Rodrigo quickly gives way to the more sprightly feel of Leoncavallo’s “Mattinata.” After moving arrestingly through similar fare, Bocelli bookends things nicely by closing with a pair of canzonas from Tosti; the passionate, poignant “‘A vucchella” and the quietly elegant “Vorrei morire,” followed immediately by Donaudy’s “Vaghissima sembianza,” which ends things on a fulsome, appropriately romantic (with a small “r”) note. Throughout SENTIMENTO, the sympathetic accompaniment of the London Symphony Orchestra, masterfully conducted by Lorin Maazel, provides the perfect instrumental setting for Bocelli’s evocative voice.

A superior Brazilian jazz singer, Ana Caram takes a slight detour on this SACD, stretching her repertoire while mostly still performing in a style influenced by bossa nova. One does not get to hear such songs as “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You,” “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head,” “Smile,” and “As Time Goes By” in a bossa nova setting that often. Also unusual is that Michel Freidenson plays all of the instruments other than the reeds (which are performed by Lawrence Feldman), and most of his electronic instruments sound real enough not to be an issue. The focus throughout is on Caram’s lovely voice and she excels on this material, showing that it really is not what you sing but how you sing it. Recommended.

Ana Caram is an excellent singer and guitarist of Brazilian music, but this set lacks any real surprises. She only plays guitar on one song, sticking to singing while being backed by a rhythm section and the saxophones of Paulo Levi. The selections all date from the 1960s (other than her original “Pura Luz”) and Caram is mostly cast in the role of Astrud Gilberto, performing Jobim tunes (including “Desafinado,” “Corcovado,” and “Triste”) and other tunes from the era, including “Blue Bossa,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” and Baden Powell’s “So Por Amor.” The results are pleasant but very predictable, with no real chances being taken nor any fresh light shone on the veteran warhorses.
